Pre-Season
Your involvement in pre-season training…
Hope you are all enjoying your summer break and
watching some of the World Cup. Time is now
getting close to start DRFC’s preparations for
next season. As you may know over the past few
years we have actively encouraged all youth
players from U16 upwards to come and join in
pre-season training. I guarantee you will be
made to feel very welcome and as well as helping
you prepare you for your club and school season
it will also help you prepare for moving into
senior rugby – many of your predecessors have
gone on to play 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV rugby while
still in their teens.
20 year old James Catton who is the current DRFC
1stXV and London & SE u20 Hooker was asked about
the youth players coming to pre-season training:
‘Attending Dorking pre-season as a 16 year is
the point when my view on what was required to
be a good rugby completely changed. I learnt
what it was to be really fit and also about what
extra I needed to do outside training evenings
to in order to be competitive in National League
rugby. Richie has bought a high level
professionalism and introduced the most up to
date training techniques which have helped me
improve my game year on year. There is no doubt
in my mind that without getting involved with
the pre-season at aged 16 I would not have
achieved what I have in such a short space of
time. I highly recommend any Youth player to
get involved - you won’t be disappointed.’
As with last season the conditioning will been
overseen by Gareth Tong & Sam from Harlequins’
professional coaching staff. Gareth will be at
training every Tuesday and more than happy to
help you out with what you should be doing on
other nights. Every Thursday myself, Paul
Hodgson (London Irish & England) & 1st XV
Captain Armand with be taking the skills and
rugby related training.
Dorking RFC have invested heavily in getting a
high quality professional coaching team and as a
paid up member of the club you should use them
to get fit and to help move your game forward -
no matter which level you are playing at present
or whatever level you aspire to. I look forward
to seeing you all in July and I am excited about
working with the future senior players of DRFC.
